Matt Duchene and Kevin Shattenkirk are going to Raleigh, N.C.

That's where the NHL's All-Star Game will be played later this month, and this morning the two Avalanche youngsters were named to participate in the festivities.

In a new wrinkle this year, the league did away with the traditional conference vs. conference format and will have two as-yet-to-be-named captains draft their own teams among the players. That draft will be held Jan. 28, with the game on Jan. 30 at the RBC Center.

Each captain will be required to select three goalies, six defensemen and 12 forwards in any order they choose.

Duchene, who turns 20 on Sunday, leads the Avalanche with 43 points in 43 games. Shattenkirk, one of 12 rookies selected, has 20 points in 31 games. He also leads the club in goals and shots (107), and is tied for first in assists and games played.
This will be Duchene's first all-star appearance.
Shattenkirk will not play in the regular game, on Sunday. He will take part, along with the other rookies selected, in skills competitions.
"I'm absolutely thrilled and honored," said Duchene. "It's something you dream about to hopefully play in the NHL All-Star Game one day. To be able to do that is a great honor and I'm very excited."
In addition to the All-Star Game participants, the league also announced today that Shattenkirk will be one of 12 rookies to take part in the NHL All-Star activities. The 12 rookies will be divided into two groups of six to compete in the Honda NHL SuperSkills on Jan. 29.

Colorado's first-round pick (14th overall) in the 2007 Entry Draft, Shattenkirk made his NHL debut on Nov. 4 and has scored 20 points in 31 games this season. Despite spending the first month of the season in the American Hockey League, Shattenkirk currently ranks second among all rookie defensemen in scoring.

"Obviously I never thought, being called up a little into the season, that this would even be a possibility," said Shattenkirk. "It's an honor to be selected among these other great rookies and to participate in the All-Star weekend."
